Morning, Afternoon and Evening Sickness

I discovered I was pregnant when I was almost seven weeks. At that point I should have already known. I had been feeling nauseous to the point where I could barely get out of bed for two and a half weeks and I was practically living off biscuits. I also had very sore and sensitive boobs, which is another dead giveaway. I was not always sick but the nausea was absolutely crippling. Of course being totally oblivious I thought I had come down with some sickness bug.

I had finished my PGCE on the 19th May and my sickness begun on 24th May. I assumed that I was just run down after working almost seven days a week for the past nine months to complete my course. It is often the case, I get ill when I stop and catch my breath I normally bombard myself with so much to do and I am always on to the next thing before I have finished what I am doing.

Being clueless and not realising that I was suffering from morning sickness I was unsure how to treat it. When I realised I still felt at sea as to how best approach it. There is so much information and advice out there its hard to know what to go with. I went out and bought peppermint tea, ginger and lemon tea, ginger biscuits and breakfast biscuits. The ginger tea made me sick because it tasted like spicy dishwater.

After trying loads of different things here is what worked for me;
  • Cold drinks first thing. I bought a water filter for the fridge and it was a life saver. I took small sips and filled a bottle I kept constantly by the bed. This didn't stop the sickness but made me feel a bit better.
  • Keeping biscuits by the side of the bed. I would eat a small breakfast biscuit in bed before getting up. This usually made me feel like crap but I would sleep for half an hour and feel a little better.
  • Travel bands. I bought these at Poundworld because I wasn't prepared to fork out a fortune in case they didn't work. I would put them on while still in bed and they seemed to ease off the sickness a bit.
  • Marmite on toast. If I could face it I would eat a slice of wholemeal toast with marmite on as soon as I got up. This would stop all nausea until lunch time.
  • Fresh juicy orange wedges. When I felt hungry this is all I fancied and it seemed to stop the nausea a little.
  • Peppermint tea. Again not so much as a cure but it is nice to drink and it also means if you are sick, it tastes alright coming back up. There is nothing worse than being sick on an empty stomach. One time I actually thought my eyes were going to pop out of my head!
  • Eat small. Eat small meals like soup or instant noodles. I used to have a huge appetite but that has vanished since being pregnant. I still have the odd days where I can put it away but nothing like I used to. I swear by Tesco own chicken noodles (10p per pack). I know they are not good for you and full of salt but when it's the only thing you can keep down anything will do. I also ate lots of mashed potato with gravy. I used Frozen mash, these days its lovely and is so quick to make.

Here is a fun list of things that have made me sick;
  • Brushing my teeth
  • Watching a man make an omelette on TV
  • Laughing
  • Coughing
  • Rushing about first thing
  • Travelling
  • Thinking about a fried egg

I would suggest that if you are responsible for the cooking in your house, like me then bite the bullet and either tell your other half to make his own dinner or buy in a load of ready meals. I bought so much food with good intentions to cook and ended up chucking loads away.

If you find you are having a hungry day don't be too concerned about what you are eating. Just have what you really fancy. I had a hungry day and ate a large Big Mac meal with a strawberry milkshake and 10 nuggets! I was so happy and it was one of the best meals I have ever had. Its sometimes inevitable that you are going to be sick, so try not to hang on to it, drink a load of water and just accept it!

Everyone you talk to will give you advice about morning sickness and here is mine... It gets better and easier. There is no cure and it does not magically stop after 12 weeks but you will work out what helps you and it will be easier. You will master not being sick on public transport, you will also master the art of a quick chunder. Your partner will see you be sick, your cat will watch you be sick and you will cry because it just doesn't seem fair. I promise it gets better.
